DESHIMA - Japan (Elégance)

Deshima across from Nagasaki, the Dutch
were confined to an island no more than two acres in
size, just above the water, and surrounded by fences
to prevent any illegitimate loading or unloading of
cargo.

The only way off the island was a solitary
bridge guarded vigilantly day and night by government officers
an Japanese policemen.Trade with Japan was strictly controlled
and apart from government agents, prostitutes and ad hoc the
Japanese were not allowed into Deshima.
Unlike the Chinese the Japanese really appreciated
the European luxury items. They would trade gold copper and
silver which Japan could supply in large quantities for the
European markets as well as lacqueware, porcelain and kimonos
which also proved to be very popular in Europe.
