CANTON - China (Elégance)

Canton (also known as Guangzhou) is in
southern China on the mouth of the Xijiang estuary.

It was an extremely important trade crossroads
where the various European merchants, established trading
posts rigth from the beginning of the 18th century.
The Chinese were carreful not to let Europeans
work their way into the country and only granted them a narrow
piece of land right on the quay. Trading between Europeans
and the Chinese was done exclusively through the Co~Bong.
To start with trade was mainly drugs and narcotics
: camphor, rhubarb esquine and cassia. There was also tea,
perceived as a drug at first, by later to become an extremely
popular item of trade. Chinas trade revolved around
two exceptional products porcelain and silk.
