CEYLON - Indian Ocean (Deluxe)
Ceylon (modern day Sri Lanka). This is
an island in southern India, that was discovered by
the Portuguese in 1505 from which they traded in spice
and precious gems.

In the 17th century the island became Dutch,
and allowed them a stop on the trip to Batavia. In 1796 Ceylon
became British and plantations were considerably developed,
but they were faced with powerful rebellions. In 1931 it was
allocated a degree of autonomy and eventually became independent.
