This town is located on the East coast
of India, it was the headquarters for the India company
in the 17th century. The French obtained permission
to settle there in 1673 and it remained an important
trading centre for them right up until 1954.
Trade here consisted mainly of low quality
textiles which would have been sold onto other markets in
Asia and Europe. It had a reputation for being extremely wealthy
the Hindus called it "City of Kubera" after the
God of wealth. In France it came to be known as the "Indian
London"…
